Back up transmission paths for legacy protocols, such
as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), typically
"spoof" the protocol at both ends to allow the IP network, including
the cellular air link, to emulate a leased serial data circuit.
The Remote Data Unit (RDU) is a protocol converter between SCADA
or another serial protocol and IP on a LAN. This scenario doesn't
provide diverse or redundant access at HQ, which can be arranged
separately.
