[VL2006] Apologies for the email flood

Friends,

First, thanks for sticking with us through the email flood last Monday. 

My deepest apologies for the incident.  We have taken several steps to
prevent a recurrence.

What happened?  After more than 40 issues sent successfully from this
server, something unknown changed the configuration of Mailman, the list
server software.  Could have been an upgrade to the software performed
by the hosting site, could have been a hacker, might have been something
else.

It's not obvious because of unexpected evidence:

   1. addresses not on the ViewsLetter list were involved.
   2. messages continued to arrive on Tuesday, the day after the server
      was shut down.
   3. requests to remove were sent here for people who didn't want to
      unsubscribe


If you have any comment, request, or suggestion, you may reply to this
special address which will be open for two weeks.  In particular, I'd
appreciate hearing from someone who receives this message (is on the
list) but did  NOT  see the flood on Monday, 30 Mar.  That would be
another item of unexpected evidence.
